DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS
by Dr Shaan - Rejuveo Aesthetics
They’re two of the world’s most widely requested cosmetic treatments but what’s the difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers? And more importantly, which one is right for you?
Dr Shaan and Dr Ahmer answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
WHAT ARE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS (BOTOX)?
Anti-wrinkle injections are used most frequently to treat signs of ageing in particular the lines which appear as a result of facial muscle movement. Botulinum toxin (e.g. BOTOX) is a naturally occurring protein which when injected into facial muscles stops them from contracting, hence we refer to this treatment as anti-wrinkle injections.
WHERE CAN I HAVE ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?
Botulinum toxin is used medically for a number of cosmetic and non cosmetic treatments. It has been used previously to reduce excessive sweating and ease headaches. It’s main use is to relax the muscles and therefore reduce the production of lines on the face.
At Rejuveo Aesthetics, Dr Ahmer and Dr Shaan treat forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.
ARE DERMAL FILLERS THE SAME AS ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?
No, Anti-wrinkle injections work on dynamic lines, which means the creases that are created when you move the muscles in your face. By temporarily relaxing the muscle we reduce the number of times you can repeatedly make a line or crease and as a result your skin appears smoother and line free.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand are used for static lines, the lines and contours of your face that are not made from movement but are always there. We use filler to add volume to enhance or shape the appearance of certain facial features.
WILL I SEE A DIFFERENCE IMMEDIATELY?
You are unlikely to notice the results of Anti-wrinkle injections immediately, it takes around 2 weeks to visually see the results. This is because the treatment relaxes the muscles to stop you making the same lines and creases, in time the lines then fade.
Dermal fillers, like anti-wrinkle injections, are made from a naturally occurring substance called Hyaluronic Acid. It sounds scary but in fact our bodies store hyaluaronic acid naturally and as we age our stores deplete. Fillers are used to inject volume and restore the sunken or flat appearance on the face hence looking more youthful.
Unlike Anti-wrinkle injections the results of filler treatment are instant, but just like Anti-wrinkle injections the body will disperse of the product naturally and results will fade.
SO, ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS AND DERMAL FILLERS ARE NOT PERMANENT? HOW LONG WILL THEY LAST?
Anti-wrinkle injections last approx 3 months but it can be longer as your muscles will slowly return and you start to create the lines and creases again. Dermal filler lasts longer, in fact it can take between 6 and 18 months to fully wear off.
HOW CAN I TELL IF I NEED DERMAL FILLER OR ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?
Generally fillers are used on the lips, cheeks, chin and jawline for volume and definition. Anti-wrinkle injections are used on the forehead, crows feet (lines in the corner of the eyes) and around the mouth. We always hold a detailed consultation before performing any treatment and we will explain our recommended product choices and areas. You may find that one treatment resolves the need for another, for example, more cheek and chin volume can lend itself to a more defined jaw.
